Free Crochet Pattern ~ Chick Earflap Hat 1 yr+

 Chick Ear Flap Hat 1 yr+



The pattern is in US terms
Items required 
5mm (H) hook
Yellow, Orange, White & Blue Double knit/ 8ply 
Stitch marker Wool needle 2 x 20mm Black Buttons

Guidelines
At the end of each round just carry on.  
Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed.
HK – hook CH – chain SS – Slip Stitch
HDC – half double crochet
HDC Inc – Half double crochet Increase.  Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
HDC Dec – Half double crochet decrease.  Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through.  Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.  
DC – Double Crochet
TRC – Treble Crochet
Gauge
7 sts & 6 rows = 2”
If your hat is coming out too big go down one hook size and vice versa if it’s too small.

Using 5mm (H) hook and  yellow yarn. 
Ch 2 (or use magic circle)
Round 1) 6 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook (6)
Round 2) 6 hdc inc (12)
Round 3) *1 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (18)
Round 4) *2 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (24)
Round 5) *3 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (30)
Round 6) *4 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (36)
Round 7) *5 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (42)
Round 8) *6 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (48)
Round 9) *7 hdc, 1 hdc inc * x 6 (54)
Round 10) *8 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (60) (1 -3 yrs go to round  13)
Round 11) *9hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (66) (3 – 10yrs go to row 13)
Round 12) *10 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (72)
Round 13) hdc around (66) (1 – 3 yrs 60, 3 – 10 yrs 66, 10 yrs+ 72)
You need another 13 rounds for each of the sizes. 
                                   (total quantity of rounds  1 – 3 yrs 24, 3 – 10 yrs 25, 10 yrs+ 26)
When you have finished the above slip stitch x 2 (don’t finish carry on with the first earflap)

Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn

Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 10 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 5) 12 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 6) 1 hdc dec, 8 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 7) 10 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 8) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn

Hair
            Cut 5 x 20cm lengths of yellow yarn
            Cut 5 x 20cm lengths of orange yarn
Put 1 yellow & 1 orange length together, feed through the top round of the hat and knot.  Do this all around the top of the hat.

Ch 8
Row 1) 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk, 5 hdc, ch 2, turn (6)
Row 2) 1 hdc dec, 2 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn (4)
Row 3) 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn (2)
Row 4) 1 hdc dec, finish (leave enough yarn to attach to hat) (1)
 Attach the beak to the centre of the face
Eyes x 2
White yarn & 5mm hook
Ch 2
Round 1) 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hk (carry on round, moving stitch marker with each round) (6)
Round 2) 6 hdc inc (12) 
Round 3) *1 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6, 2 ss, finish (leave enough yarn to attach to hat) (18)
         Attach the eyes     
    Attach the buttons to the middle of the eyes
 
 

Flower
Blue yarn & 5mm (H) hook
Round 1) Ch 5, ss to join (5)
Round 2) ch 2, 5 hdc around, ss to join (5)
Round 3) in stitch one (ch 2, dc, trc, dc, ch 2, ss) in the next stitch (ss, ch 2, tr, dc, trc, dc, ch2, ss) x 4, ss with middle to finish. (37)
Attach the flower to the hat
